    “I don’t get how artists — even artists that I love — stick with one aesthetic their whole careers. Not to say that it’s wrong, I just don’t get it,” says August Northcut. I once saw him dancing in City Market with a cane, wearing a vest and pointed black dress shoes, hair bouncing in the bun on top of his head, seemingly unperplexed by those drunkenly avoiding his jig. He seemed just as random as his own creative process. Northcut says illustration is all about problem solving. Seeing him jokingly dance, I imagined what his problem solving process must be like.

    It’s actually something like that dance. “I just start throwing stuff on the canvas,” says Northcut, who feels that he is merely “a vessel” that brings a work of art to life...
